Salons can clean up their act...a few tips on how to help your salon become more green.

We salon folk are up there on the offenders list of contributing to excess trash, using a lot of water, as well as power etc.

Think about it, we use metal tubes, and plastic bottles for color (maybe on a busy day at least 10 plus) that we throw right into the trash.

These bottles and tubes will never decompose, so they just sit there, forever, in our land fills.

While I admit that it is difficult for hair salons to be completely green, here are some helpful tips on becoming green and contributing less to the overall problem.

I've broken down each section and listed tips and links to sites that offer great products and services.

Recycle
There are so many items we can recycle in the salon. Locate your local recycling drop off and encourage other salons in your neighborhood to do the same.
Items we can recycle:
Hair color tubes and bottles, soda cans and plastic containers, the list goes on. Look around your salon and see what you can recycle. You will be amazed at how much you will find.
If you get money back from recycling, buy a beautiful plant for the salon (air cleaning plants are good, and an orchid is always a good investment, they last forever and require little water).

Remodeling/Upgrading your salon
If you are building out, or upgrading, consider these eco friendly alternatives:
Bamboo floors
Solar panels
Florescent or LED bulbs
Eco friendly paint www.bioshieldpaint.com
Ceiling fans
Tint windows where direct sun comes in, this will help save on air bills
Set thermostats properly.

Energy Saving Ideas
Turn off lighting when certain areas of salon are not being used.
Unplug appliances entirely from the walls (i.e. power strips). If power strips are left plugged in, power is still be used even though appliances are not on.
Our blow dryers, irons etc. are plugged into the wall 365 days a year, which means we are constantly pulling electricity.
Stylists, don't over use towels on clients.
These extra towels ultimately have to be laundered which uses more energy and water.
The State of California is in dire straights as far as water goes, do not waste water at all costs.
We get a good amount of water from Colorado, and they are at a point where they cannot supply us with water due to droughts, etc.
Farmers are suffering and cannot properly tend to crops, in the long term, that translates to shortages of fruits and vegetables as well as other produce grown in CA. This shortage affects not only us here in sunny CA, but everyone across the U.S.

Cleaning your salon
Use cloth, not paper towels.
You know you have a ton of color stained towels that you can use for cleaning!
Place recycle bins in your color/supply rooms.
Another good tip, get a small compost container for left overs from lunch, etc. and then use compost in your garden

or http://www.gardeners.com/Stainless-Steel-Compost-Crock/Composting_New,37-985,default,cp.html

Promotional gifts for clients
Don't bother with having pens, or post it notes made. These items create more waste in the end. Think about having Canvas Shopping bags made with your salon name on them. When clients buy products they can use their salon canvas bag.

Promotional Event
Sponsor an "eco day" where you have a contest for the most recyclables brought in by a customer, then give them free products or services. You can let your local TV and radio stations know and hopefully they will promote it. It's good PR and good for the planet : )

Change what you use/do in the Salon
There are so many companies that offer recycled cups, paper, etc. Look them up on the Internet and make the switch. Here are some ideas:
Cups for beverages at salon
Recycled coffee stirrers
Buy sugar cubes instead of sugar packets, less waste (and looks prettier : )
Use recycled paper cups
Bamboo plates
Recycled envelopes, stationery
Recycled paper for business cards
Set lights, fountains, etc. on timers so that they operate only during business hours

Pure Hair Extensions
We are proud to be a Pure certified salon.
Pure Extensions is the only eco friendly, socially conscience hair extension company we are aware of. The company's initiatives are groundbreaking and stylists should incorporate this product in the services offered at their salons.
The following link answers all your questions, and if you have more questions, the friendly people at Pure hair Extensions are always available to assist you. TIGI (Toni & Guy)
I am a graduate of Toni & Guy's Advanced Training Academy and have the TIGI hair care and color lines stocked in the salon.
TIGI has just come out with their eco line, Love, Peace & the Planet. This line uses natural and organic ingredients, with very little synthetics. The packaging is recyclable too!
One of my favorite products from TIGI for my hair extension clients is Dirty Secret Shampoo from their Rockaholic line. I always advise clients with extensions to not wash daily if possible, this dry shampoo helps you get an extra day before having to shampoo (thus saving water and energy!).

So there you have it...I am sure you will think of many other ways to make your salon more green. Please be sure to comment and share your ideas!

Toning down bleached hair, a nice compromise.

This is Bonnie Miller from the band "Neosonic".

Bonnie was tired of the up keep of bleaching the top of her hair (scalp out) regularly.

She didn't want to lose the edgy feel of her color, so we blended the bleached top with low lights and toner.

Now, she only has to do her color every month and a half!

Be sure and check out the amazing talents of Bonnie and John here http://www.myspace.com/neosonic

This brand is perfect for those that prefer to wear their hair straight regularly.

Everything at Pure Extensions is 100% recyclable from the packaging to the hair.

The hair can be reused for up to a year with regular adjustments every 6 to 8 weeks.

No glue, or any other bonding material is used. The bonds are attached with micro cylinders making these extensions truly, damage free.

A few words on Flat Iron use....

FLAT IRONS ARE NOT YOUR FRIEND!!!
by Denise Genova, Owner, Beauty on Robertson

If you are a client of mine, then you already know about my incessant preaching of NOT using flat irons.

I have successfully persuaded more than 3/4 of my clients from using the dreaded flat iron.

Almost 98% of my clients do not need to use a flat iron... Don't get me wrong, a small group of people can use a flat iron, and not suffer damage.

On the other hand, a good many cannot, and should not use flat irons.

Why? Because for some, their hair literally ends up looking like someone lit a match at the ends of it.

I have surveyed many clients at the salon, and they almost all say that they turn the iron up to the highest temperature to "quickly" do their hair.

Here is wherein the problem lies. The extreme high heat on hair that is fragile, bleached, colored, or just fine in texture, burns the ends of the hair. Fraying the ends of your hair like this leads to continued damage as the hair continues to spilt upward. So, in the end, you have spilt ends so bad that they travel upward to the top of your hair.

What I suggest is that you use straightening hair products (we like Belegenza's "Simply Straight Progressive Straightener", we carry it at the salon) and work a little harder with the blow dryer if you want straight hair.

We can show you how to straighten your hair, and recommend the best products for your hair type. We carry excellent products that are geared to all the different hair types.

If you feel that you have created some damage to your hair with an iron, and are ready to stop using a flat irons, call us.

We have a wonderful once a month conditioning treatment that can get you back on track. A lot of actors, models, soccer moms, business people, etc. come in for this treatment regularly and are so thrilled by the results!

In the cases of models and actors, their hair takes a great toll with all the regular heat styling they endure daily. We are so happy when we see that their hair looks beautiful and healthy on T.V., and on film.

Beauty on Robertson makes healthy hair its first priority!

The main product lines we carry are: Belegenza, Davines, and Pureology.

We carry these lines because they work well with hair extensions, and they preserve color.

Clients that use these products find that their color doesn't fade, and lasts longer.

Let us design a program to restore your hair to optimal health and teach you what products will help minimize damage from heat styling.

The dangers of glue extensions applied by a non-professional

This client came to us desperate for help!

Every salon she visited said they would need to shave her hair off to get rid of the matting and glue caused by inferior hair extensions applied by a non-professional.

We were able to slowly comb out the matting (took 6 hours) and save her hair.

This post shows what can happen when extensions are applied incorrectly.

It is important to only have extensions applied by licensed professionals.

Tired of blonde, the road back to brunette

Having become tired of the upkeep of blonde hair, our naturally brunette client wanted to change out her extensions and go back to her natural brunette color.

When hair has been stripped of color, the sylist needs to first re-deposit the natural primary colors to get back to brunette.

Just depositing a neutral brown color without adding back the missing primary colors will almost always result in a greenish tinge to the new brunette color.

This is when you need to have a stylist handle the tint back.

The photos show the stages of coloring to get our client to her natural color.

After adding the red/orange colors back, we finally added a rich brown color, which you see in the end result.

This is a corrective process that requires 2 to 3 applications of demi, or semi permanent color. We never use permanent colors to tint back to natural. It is unnecessary and causes damage to the hair.

If you desire to go back to a darker color, consult a stylist, this is not something you can achieve by grabbing a box of color over the counter.

Multi Color Hi-lights, within the range of your natural color

This client is a great example of using multiple colors within her natural color range to create dimension.

Because she has a level 6 natural base, we were able to create alernating hi-lights with golden and light blonde shades, along with low-lights that reflect a rich sable brown.

When staying in the color range by 2 to 3 levels higher and lower, we are able to create beautiful dimensional color.

Client's love this procedure.

This color technique is extremely low maintenance as repeat visits can be scheduled every 6 to 12 weeks.

When you keep clients within their color range, the hair is healthy and damage free!

HairDreams Hair Extensions Demonstration

HairDreams Hair Extensions demo by Denise Genova for Beauty on Robertson

This brief video shows how HairDreams Hair Extensions are applied.

Katie is the model in this video. She is a dancer that visited this summer from Poland and worked in videos as well as trained at some of the best dance studios in Los Angeles.

Katie is in the process of growing out an a-line haircut and is frustrated with waiting for her hair to get longer so she could change the cut.

We applied HairDreams hair Extensions to Katie's hair to help grow out the previous cut she desired to change.

HairDreams was chosen for Katie because she has very thick hair with a slight wave. HairDreams extensions worked perfectly to balance out her natural hair with the extensions to help her have the hair she wants, while waiting for her a-line cut to grow out.

Katie's Testimonial

" I am a dancer and it's very important in this profession to have thick, full hair that moves. Now, my every dance move looks more expressive. I feel more feminine and confident with my long and thick hair. And, no one can tell I have extensions! An added benefit, is that the color looks so natural. Thanks Denise, you rock."

Katie D. from Poland.( Professional dancer)

Great Lengths Hair Extensions

When a client has thinner, finer hair, I usually opt to use Great Lengths Extensions.

They are extremely customizable with respect to the bonds. I can add more finer strands that do not appear bulky.

It is important to "load balance" the hair. To get a natural look, we want the top of the clients natural hair to match/blend with the extensions.

If the hair is thinner/finer on top, and the extensions are heavy and bulky, it becomes obvious that someone is wearing extensions.

Before we applied the extensions in this instance, we colored the client's hair with an emphasis of blonding at the top, and rich browns underneath. The end result gives a hi-light/low-light effect.

If you are interested in Great Lengths Hair extensions call me at 310-360-0006, or visit the website to learn more about hair extensions.
